Sunday 11 August 2013 - Ivrea to Como

We had a little sleep-in then packed up after breakfast to leave La Villa, Ivrea.  Lyn and Chris picked us up and drove us to Como.  The Italian countryside is so lovely and there is such a variety of sights to see.  We passed through many small towns, saw vineyards, farms, lakes, and people just going about their daily lives.  We arrived in the city of Como and found our hotel, Albergo Terminus, across the road from Lake Como.  Sharney had a separate room.  Our bathroom facilities were not adequate for me.  I could wheel in to the shower but difficult to get on the small seat in the corner, attached to the wall.  The toilet had a small horizontal rail on the side and a long rail behind the toilet.

When we settled in, we went for a walk to the city square and had something to eat.  We were disappointed that the courtyard café area of the hotel was inaccessible.  We looked outside and inside the magnificent Duomo and we were allowed to take photos inside.  The cathedral is filled with intricate statues, stained glass windows and beautifully painted high ceilings.  The architecture and elaborate decoration is stunning.  We wandered the cobblestone streets for a little while.  There are a lot of people about as this is the height of the tourist season.  We returned to the hotel for a nap.

Later we returned to the square for dinner at da Pietro Ristorante from where we could see the cathedral.  There were a number of hawkers chasing the tourist dollar with cheap toys to attract children.  Some had small lights that flew high in to the sky and were then retrieved by the hawker.  We enjoyed our dinner, watching the “passing parade” of people in the square.  There was someone dressed as Mickey Mouse – must have been hot!  It seemed an incongruous sight in an Italian city.  After dinner we went for a walk along a path beside the lake.  It was very pretty with coloured lights reflecting on the water.  We passed a water park with water gushing from the ground in different colours which the children really enjoyed on this hot day.
