We
left with Lyn and Chris mid-morning for the four hour drive to Venice.
It was again a very pleasant drive through the Italian countryside. On the way we stopped at one of those petrol
stations for fuel, food and use of restroom.
We arrived at the Tronchetto parking station in Venice where our van stayed till our
return. Lyn and Chris stayed at a
different place. Sharney, Terry and I
boarded a Vaporetto (water bus) with all our luggage. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful Venetian
buildings along the route. There were
many small canals off the main one. We
saw gondolas, small craft and of course other Vaporetto. We disembarked at a stop showing on the map
as being the closest to our hotel. On
the map, it looked so easy. However,
when we disembarked with our luggage we were confronted with one of Venice’s many small
bridges. The first one had what looked
like a black rubber mat, about a metre wide on each side of the bridge. Terry was able to get me over that bridge. Then there was a second bridge and I was
beginning to despair “Why have we come to Venice,
this won’t work!” Terry went to get help
from two young men nearby to help carry me over the bridge. They refused to accept any payment. Then we found there was yet another bridge to
cross. Our frustration was growing. Sharney and I stayed with our luggage while
Terry went in search of our hotel, not an easy task.
The
hotel was well hidden but then two staff members came to help us cross the
final bridge and take us to the Liassidi
Palace hotel. We all shared the very nice room, which was
on the ground floor. A shower chair was
provided for the shower, but there were no rails. I could wheel to the shower, but the shower
doors proved difficult. The shower
wasn’t big enough to fit me and close the doors properly. The toilet had a floor to ceiling vertical
pole, but no side rail. It took a lot of
effort to transfer from the chair to the pole and swing my body around. So not ideal, but we managed.
We
went to dinner at da Jonny restaurant which was not far. The staff helped me up the step to get inside
and we had a delicious meal. We returned
to our hotel and sat in the courtyard near the entrance. The drink waiter was serving cocktails so we
all had a drink. The drink waiter had
worked in Australia
and spoke English very well. It was a
late night.
