Sunday 18 August 2013 - Florence

Sharney, Terry and I visited the Uffizi art gallery today, spending most of the day there.  We again went to the head of the queue but then had some trouble getting in as we needed to get the lift to the gallery level and the lift was not wide enough for my wheelchair – unbelievable!  It was a very small lift.  Anyway, the staff were very helpful, taking us almost all around the gallery (a U-shaped building) to access a larger lift.  They co-ordinated our entry with other staff using their walkie talkies and so we got in.  No photographs allowed inside the building but we could take photos out the open windows.  The gallery is undergoing some refurbishment  work. We spent the day seeing the most magnificent artworks including Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus”.  It was crowded and so much to see, you could not linger too long admiring one painting.  My favourite room was the Michelangelo Room which showed some of his paintings and a stunningly beautiful statue of “Cleopatra” which is the centrepiece of the room.  We had lunch at the Gallery café which overlooks the Duomo.

It was a tiring day with some overwhelmingly beautiful artwork.  Terry and I left Sharney and we returned to our hotel for a rest.  Later we all had dinner at a restaurant in the Piazza Della Signoria where we could see the town hall where the “fake David” stands.  We could see many beautiful statues from where we sat eating – a cultural feast.
