We
got up early and packed our bags. Lyn
and Chris picked us up at 9.30 am and we drove about 380 kms to Florence, which took
about four hours. We stopped at a petrol
station to refuel and go to the toilet.
The disabled toilet was very good for me. It had a long horizontal and also vertical
bar on the wall, as well as a pull down rail on the other side. Unfortunately it had the “legal” toilet seat
for disabled people with the gap in the middle that doesn’t suit me. We also “refuelled” our stomachs as these
petrol stops have restaurants and a small grocery store attached.
As
we entered Florence, Victoria told us how to get to our
hotel. We were guided down narrow
streets, crowded with pedestrians. Most
of these roads are “shared”. As we drove
down a street, we caught our first sight of the Florence Duomo. All these cathedrals are magnificent
buildings and so prominent. We found
Hotel Pierre and parked outside. The
hotel is centrally located, a short distance from the Duomo square. We unloaded our gear and checked in. The van was then taken away to a parking
station by one of the hotel staff. Lyn
and Chris are staying the night here then in the morning getting the train to Cinque Terre for a few days.
Sharney, Terry and I went
for a walk around the Duomo, which was a very large building and surrounded by
many tourists, as well as hawkers and beggars.
Horse and buggies are very popular with the tourists and you need to be
wary as you walk around to ensure you keep out of their way. We walked down some lovely streets and then
had dinner at a “classy” restaurant across the road from the hotel. Lyn and Chris then joined us and we had a
very pleasant evening.
