Wednesday 7 August 2013 - Ivrea

Fondo
I was up early and tired – not getting enough sleep.  Chris picked up me, Sharney and some of the other ladies to take us in the Citroen van for a drive in to the mountains.  We drove through Traversella near where Chris and some of the other rowers are staying.  He took us further in to the mountains along some narrow roads to Fondo.  He and others had been there for a meal in the small restaurant there the evening before and thought it would be a good place to show us.  It was absolutely gorgeous – so many very old buildings made from stones with a stone bridge over a small river passing through the village.  It was strange to see a satellite dish amidst these homes.   There was a small church and there were some tourists who were visiting and using kayaks on the river.  This visit was “off the beaten track” and a step back in time.  We all appreciated the beauty of the place.

We then drove back to Traversella for lunch at the Hotel Miniere which has beautiful views over the valley below and the distant mountains.  It was a rich iron mining area until the end of World War II and photographs of the mines and mined objects are displayed in the Ristorante.  We all enjoyed a delicious meal and delighted in ambling along the streets near the Hotel.  The village has a small population with a mixture of old and “refurbished” homes.  Flowers are everywhere adding to the beauty of the village.

Lunch at Traversella
World Masters Games Rowing Regatta
When we finished our lunch we went straight to the rowing course at Lake Candia to see the finals of some of the races in the World Masters Games Rowing Regatta.  We were in time to see Toowong Rowing Club win the men’s F8, which Terry was very pleased about.  It was a great atmosphere as we watched this crew and other Toowong crews succeed so well.  Unfortunately, the event was marred by a farcical display when the event organisers had some issues with the race placings.  As they couldn’t resolve it then, they told the gathered throng awaiting the medal presentations that it would take place the following day.  So we all went to leave, some of the rowers went for a row in preparation for the next day and then the loud speaker announced there would be one presentation only at that time – the Men’s F8. So some, including Terry, went back to the presentation dais, but not all the rowers were there to receive their medals.  Terry kept them and presented the medals to the rowers at dinner that night back at the Hotel Villa.
